Shark-bit porpoise fin found at beach cleanup

You never know what you're going to find at a beach cleanup! Sean Malloy holds up what appeared to be a shark-bit porpoise fin from the Otter Rock n Roll beach cleanup challenge. We weren't exactly encouraging the kids at this years event to pick up more than the usual trash, but with a most unusual find category in our cleanup challenge, Sean couldn't help but pick up this rather disturbing find and bring it back to the gathering. The fin was about 18 inches in total width and consistent with that of harbor porpoises commonly found along our coast. The bite marks, clearly seen across the center of the fin and below Sean's left hand in the photo, are consistent with that of a juvenile great white. Each individual tooth dentation was between 1-2 inches wide and angular in orientation. This year's Otter Rock n Roll event was a blast, we could have wished for better weather, but surfers, beachgoers and participants had a great time. Northwest Surf and Snow did a great little wrap up, check it out here and see more of Jens great photos from the event here.
