Mother nature graced us with perfect weather for another fantastic state wide beach clean-up last Saturday. In Newport over 460 volunteers from around the state showed up at the 5 beaches Surfrider volunteers staffed in the local area.
These awesome individuals, young and old, truly the heroes of our Oregon beaches, removed nearly 3100 pounds of trash! Most of it was plastic items and pieces of plastic items no longer recognizable. Plenty of cigarette butts, styrofoam, rope, bottles and cans were also recovered.
Huge thanks to our zone captain Sage for organizing us and providing the materials we needed and Vince for obtaining donations from Safeway and Fred Meyer's so we could share treats with the volunteers. And many thanks to all of the beach captains- Delores, Leo, Ryan, Laura, Vince, Ann, Ted, Charlie and Jacque, that kept the volunteers smoothly moving onto the beaches.
