The Oregon Coat Community College Foundation will present two free community education lectures featuring Stiv Wilson of the 5 Gyres Institution on October 25th, 3:00pm and 7:00pm.
The first will be held at the central county campus at 400 SE College Way at 3:00 pm and the second lecture will be held at 7:00 pm at the Newport Performing Arts Center. Stiv has been long time advocate, leader and member of Surfrider Foundation, serving as Portland Chapter Chair for 2 years and helping to initiate the chapter's 4 year plight to ban plastic bags, the first city in Oregon. Stiv set his sites on the sea, joining up with 5 Gyres Institute 4 years ago. Bringing together his interest in marine debris, plastic pollution research and advocacy with his love of sailing the worlds oceans for adventure, Stiv has now sailed to 4 of the 5 ocean gyres through his work with the 5 Gyres Institution. Stiv's 40 minute presentation will focus on his experience sailing to four of the five subtropical oceanic gyres or "garbage patches" investigating plastic pollution in our oceans. His presentation will also highlight the recent interest in tsunami debris, sharing photos and film.
