Aquamarine to meet with public, city and county planners

The Planning Commission of the City of Newport and the Lincoln County Planning Commission will hold a joint work session meeting at 6:00 p.m., Monday, February 28, 2011, at the Newport City Hall, Council Chambers, 169 SW Coast Hwy, Newport, OR 97365.  On agenda is a presentation from Aquamarine Power, a wave energy company looking to pilot and develop their "Oyster" wave energy devices in several areas along the coast. A presentation will be given on the various areas that the company applied for Department of State Land permits to begin testing the wave energy potential for those areas. While the state's planning process for wave energy development is yet to be complete, we think that allowing areas for pilot projects at this time is premature, and should follow territorial sea planning rather than precede it. Our comments on the project application are below and the map above shows a few areas within the Lincoln county area that Aquamarine is interested in.
