SOLVE's Beach and Riverside Cleanup 9/19

Take Care of Your Community

Join thousands of volunteers on September 19 as we take care of Oregon’s neighborhoods, parks, and natural areas. It's an easy, fun way to get outside, meet your neighbors, and make a difference by cleaning up litter and marine debris, removing invasive plants, or planting native trees and shrubs at project sites along the entire coast and across the state.

Part of the International Coastal Cleanup and National Public Lands Day, the SOLVE Beach & Riverside Cleanup has been a family-friendly Oregon tradition for over three decades. Get involved today and make a difference for tomorrow!

Who Can Volunteer?

This is a family friendly event (note that some sites may have minimum age restrictions). Businesses, church groups, students, families, and individuals have all participated in Beach & Riverside Cleanup events.

How do I register for a site?

Come join us in Newport at one of our 5 sites. Click the links below to register. Please contact Sage at beachcleanups@newport.or.surfrider.org if you have any questions or comments.

Come Prepared, Stay Safe, and Have Fun!

SOLVE provides bags, gloves, tools, and instructions once you check in at your project site. Be prepared for changing weather and wear sturdy shoes.  Additional tips to maximize cleanup and sustainability efforts include:

  • Bring a pair of gardening gloves to reduce use of vinyl gloves
  • Bring a reusable water bottle and/or coffee mug
  • Carpool and use public transportation where possible
  • Plan ahead and pack a "trash-free" lunch
  • At litter cleanups, bring a bucket or reusable bag to reduce to amount of plastic bags used
  • At beach cleanups, bring an old colander to sift the tide lines for harmful, bite-sized bits of plastic
  • If you find any hazardous debris, do not touch it! Please report it to your project leader

2015 International Coastal Cleanup

The SOLVE Beach & Riverside Cleanup is part of an annual world-wide effort to keep our beaches healthy and reduce the impacts on marine life. In 2014, the Ocean Conservancy's 29th Annual International Coastal Cleanup mobilized over 560,000 volunteers to collect more than 16 million pounds of trash from coastal beaches to inland waterways in 91 countries. See the resulting Ocean Trash Index and Top Ten Items Removed along Oregon waterways last year. Register to volunteer at a site near you on September 19 and join the world's largest volunteer effort for our oceans!
