Pass a Comprehensive Foodware Ordinance in Newport, OR

The Newport, Oregon Chapter is advocating for City Council to pass a comprehensive plastic and foam foodware ordinance.

VICTORY! On December 6, 2021 the Newport City Council passed the ordinance and a companion resolution that will support implementation. Click here for more details.

Disposable plastic to-go-ware for food is consistently among the top 10 items found during the International Coastal Cleanup. Though disposal options are abundant, these items are also commonly found on Newport-area beaches – often as litter, not marine debris washing up from other places.

Plastic utensils are usually automatically included with to go meals; however, 98% of all U.S. takeout or delivery meals are consumed at home or a workplace, where reusable cutlery is typically available. Alternative utensils are readily available for customers that do not have access to reusable utensils for their meal.

The City of Newport has the opportunity to make a strong action to protect the ocean by passing Ordinance 2178, an Ordinance Restricting the Use of Single-use EPS Foam and Plastic Food Service Ware.
